FAQ
Farm FAQ
How many goats and sheep do you have?
We have about 120 head of goats and sheep on the farm.
Are there any other farm animals?
Yes! We also have a few hogs, assorted poultry, and some very important dogs and cats.
Can I meet the animals?
Yes and no. Most of the herd is busy grazing and ruminating out in the fields. But we've set up an area for meeting our ambassador goats, and we offer guided tours (check Fragafarm.com for more info).
- Fred and Stashie, our "barn cats," are often up for socializing.
- Our geese-Goosehilda, Gooseheld, and Gooselittle-may look intimidating, but they're surprisingly friendly (for geese).
- Chickens love treats! Look for the chicken treat jar.
Can I explore the whole farm on my own?
Nope-this is a working farm with biosecurity measures and herd guardian dogs. But we've carved out a public space with a farm stand, picnic area, and ambassador goats. For the rest of the farm, guided tours are available by appointment only.
I just need cheese and need to zip-what's the best way?
Swing by the farm store! The fridge is stocked, and there's a pay station on the wall. Easy-peasy.
How can I learn more?
We're working on self-guided materials, and we're always up for answering a quick question-flag us down or call the number in the store. For deep dives, book a tour or class! If you have lots of questions, consider leaving a tip in the jar. It helps us keep doing all the things: milking goats, making cheese, growing pasture, handling marketing, bookkeeping, and more.
Can I have a picnic here?
Yes! We've set up picnic tables just for that. Many folks enjoy cheese or gelato right on the spot. We're also happy to recommend local hikes and swimming holes nearby.

What’s the difference between a balm and a lotion?
It’s all about the water — or lack of it. Lotions are mostly water (about 80%) mixed with oil and require emulsifiers and preservatives. Balms are anhydrous (no water), so they’re more concentrated, shelf-stable, and preservative-free. That's the three sentence answer. For a deeper dive check out our blog post all about it here.
Do lotions hydrate better?
They hydrate briefly. Humectants in lotion (like glycerin) pull water to the skin’s surface, but it evaporates quickly unless sealed in with an occlusive. That’s why you reapply often.
How do balms work?
Balms seal in your skin’s own moisture by forming a protective barrier, reducing water loss by up to 60%. Ours are made with freeze-dried goat milk and nutrient-rich oils, no filler ingredients.
Will balms clog pores?
Not if they’re well-formulated. We carefully select ingredients that work with your skin, not against it.
Why use lotion at all?
Lotions feel light and absorb quickly — and they’ve been marketed that way. But marketing can cost more than the actual ingredients. Balms may seem small, but they pack a moisturizing punch.
Bottom line?
A 2 oz balm delivers as much skin-loving goodness as a 12 oz lotion bottle — without the water, waste, or plastic. Plus, balms travel better and last longer. We think they win this round.
Why choose bar soap over liquid soap?
Bacteria need moisture to grow. Liquid soap provide a better environment for microbial survival and multiplication that can lead to a contaminated product. Bar soaps are solid and have very little available water in them making them a hostile environment to bacteria. Read more about it here.
Why do the soaps vary in color?
Our soaps are completely handmade from start to finish without the use of Mica. Mica is often used as a "natural" colorant in artisanal soap. It leads to predictable color results across batches. Mica is a mineral that is mined in parts of India and Madagascar. Much of the mining for mica uses child labor and unsafe conditions for workers. We choose not to use Mica for those reasons and instead rely on natural pigments derived from plants, like Indigo, which can vary batch by batch. We wrote a whole blog post about it. Find it here.
